Ritter Sport Corn Flakes Chocolate
Sun, 11/02/2008 - 12:58pm | 98 comments
My favorite German chocolate - even though there are plenty of other good ones around. I wish that I could find this particular kind of Ritter Sport candy bar here in the United States, but up until now I've been able to find every other kind but this one. Brings back great memories of school field trips to the Ritter chocolate factory...

Haribo Gummi Candy - The Original Gold-Bears
Wed, 10/15/2008 - 7:06pm | 95 comments
First of all I would like to say that hands down, Haribo makes the best German Gummi Candies. It's true. If you've ever tried another brand, you'd know and once you try Haribo, you'd never go back!
Haribo Gummi Candy Gold-Bears are just bursting with Flavor! They are soft and chewy. (But not so soft that they are sticky and stick to your teeth)! I've loved these since I was young and now my kids love them too. They come in about six different flavors and each one is yummy! You also get a good mix of colors and flavors. They're a great snack and most people can eat them because they're not a "chocolate-type candy" where you'd have to worry about allergies.

Good Bye, Lenin!

This wonderful movie shows, how living in Eastern Germany was like until the wall came down in 1990. It lets you understand, what kind of a "culture shock" the Western lifestyle was for those, who had been living in that socialistic state all life long.
Eastern Germans watch the movie and recall tender memories of the way they used to live. Western Germans and people of other nationalities finally understand, that living over there was not "just bad".
Besides all the negative there were a lot of funny and enjoyable things, that now are part of many people's precious past, which shaped their personality and made them what they are today.
The film will make you laugh and cry at the same time. It is a comedy and at the same time a drama. This movie is recommandable for everyone who is wanting to find out more about Germany's modern history and still wants to enjoy a nice TV-evening and laugh...

Emma Speaks German Doll
Tue, 09/30/2008 - 7:14pm | 96 comments
We received this doll as a gift. We want our kids to grow up to be bi-lingual. They immediately took to Emma. The doll speaks clearly in both english and german and is a great way to help reinforce what we are saying to them. I wish it had updates for new phrases as our kids great intro tool. We are thinking of getting another one for a different language.

German New York City
Sun, 08/31/2008 - 9:11pm | 93 comments
I have to confess, I haven't read it - but it's on my reading list if I ever move to New York. From the cover:
German New York City celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the hundreds of thousands of German immigrants who left the poverty and turmoil of 19th- and 20th-century Europe for the promise of a better life in the bustling American metropolis. German immigration to New York peaked during the 1850s and again during the 1880s, and by the end of the 19th century New York had the third-largest German-born population of any city worldwide. German immigrants established their new community in a downtown Manhattan neighborhood that became known as Kleindeutschland or Little Germany. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much of the German population moved north to the Upper East Side's Yorkville and subsequently spread out to the other boroughs of the city.
